Your Connection to the Wild Side of the Park

Having a naturalist on staff is essential to the mission of state parks, serving as both an educator and steward of the land. Naturalists play a key role in connecting visitors to the natural world through engaging programs, guided hikes, interactive exhibits, and interpretive displays that highlight the unique ecosystems, wildlife, and landscapes found within the park. They help guests understand the importance of conservation and inspire a lasting appreciation for the environment. Beyond education, naturalists contribute scientific expertise to park management—monitoring wildlife, supporting habitat restoration, and advising on ecological best practices to ensure the long-term health of natural resources. They also help interpret the cultural and historical significance of the land, sharing stories of indigenous heritage, pioneer history, and the park’s role in regional development. By promoting environmental awareness and encouraging responsible recreation, naturalists play a vital role in both enhancing the visitor experience and protecting the park for future generations.

Meet the Naturalist

Anna Crow

Anna is a passionate natural resources professional with a strong background in outdoor education and equine programming. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management and a minor in Nature-Based Recreation. During her time at Auburn, Anna received two awards from the prestigious Conservation Governance Lab, held multiple executive officer positions in her professional sorority, and became a certified Prescribed Burn Manager through the Alabama Forestry Commission.

A lifelong Girl Scout, Anna is a recipient of the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards and served as a GSUSA National Delegate in 2014. She has managed outdoor programs for three Girl Scout councils and is currently spearheading a new partnership between Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama and Alabama State Parks to create programs that help Girl Scouts explore the outdoors and learn about natural resources.

Raised on a horse farm in Odenville, AL, Anna has spent much of her life in the saddle—competing in horse shows, teaching riding lessons, and working as a horse trainer. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, trail riding with her horse Chico, and spending time with her West Highland Terrier, Bella.

Since joining the Alabama State Parks system in November 2024, Anna has brought the same energy and innovation she has showcased throughout her career to Lake Guntersville State Park and Buck's Pocket State Park. She has recently developed a groundbreaking interpretive program that combines historical storytelling with guided horseback trail rides—the first of its kind in any Southeastern U.S. parks system!
